Adult boxelder bugs are easy to identify: roughly half an inch long, dark gray to black with distinct red stripes along the body and wing margins. Immature nymphs are bright red. Boxelder Bugs vs. Other Fall Home Invaders

Boxelder bugs, multicolored Asian lady beetles, and clover mites are among the most common seasonal home-invading pests in South Carolina. They behave similarly in fall and are often confused for one another.

Multicolored Asian lady beetles are about one-third of an inch long, yellow to orange, with or without black spots. Like boxelder bugs, they congregate on sunny building exteriors in fall and find their way inside through gaps. Clover mites are much smaller and red, and they’re more likely to appear near windows and on sills.

One practical difference: boxelder bugs occasionally bite and cause mild skin irritation, while Asian lady beetles and clover mites generally don’t. None of the three spread disease in a way that poses a health risk, but all three can become a serious nuisance when populations are large.

For any of these seasonal invaders, exterior spot treatment at entry points is the preferred approach when the problem becomes intolerable. Blanket indoor pesticide use isn’t recommended and often isn’t effective. If you’re not sure which pest you’re dealing with, our inspection can identify it and guide the treatment plan.
